Alcohol dependence, also known as alcoholism, is a condition where someone suffers from overpowering cravings for alcohol and is unable to control their drinking. Over time, they are also likely to have to drink greater amounts in order to feel the same effects, and will suffer from withdrawal symptoms when they stop drinking.
Doctors diagnose an alcohol disorder when it is considered that drinking is causing a patient distress or harm. It affects people’s physical and mental health, and can cause problems with family, friends and work.
Monitoring your alcohol intake is important because it helps to be aware of the signs that could be the start of a drinking problem.
